Sukh shitophaladi churan

Sukh Shitophaladi Churna is a classical Ayurvedic polyherbal formulation in powder (churna) form, primarily indicated for managing respiratory conditions. Its name derives from its key ingredient, Shitophala (Cordia dichotoma/Gargati). The blend acts as a natural expectorant, bronchodilator, and anti-inflammatory agent, targeting the Kapha and Pitta doshas to relieve cough, bronchitis, asthma, and throat irritation by promoting the elimination of excess mucus.

Product Description

1. Therapeutic Aim (Prayojana): To alleviate disorders of the respiratory tract (pranavaha srotas) by exhibiting Kapha-Pitta Shamaka (pacifying) actions. Its primary functions are Shwasahara (anti-asthmatic), Kasahara (anti-tussive), Swarya (voice-enhancing), and Kaphaghna (mucolytic/expectorant). 2. Core Herbal Composition & Pharmacodynamic Actions: The formulation is based on a traditional ratio, typically centered around Shitophala. Shitophala / Gargati (Cordia dichotoma / Cordia myxa): Doshaghna: Primarily Kapha-Pitta pacifier. Action (Karma): Shothahara (anti-inflammatory), Shwasahara, Kasahara. It is the chief ingredient for soothing inflamed mucous membranes of the throat and bronchi. Secondary & Supporting Herbs (Common in the Formulation): Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra): Demulcent, expectorant, and adrenergic. Soothes the throat (Swarya), reduces irritation, and supports adrenal function. Pippali (Piper longum): Deepana (digestive stimulant), Shwasahara. Enhances the bioavailability of other herbs (Yogavahi) and has bronchodilatory effects. Bharangi (Clerodendrum serratum): Potent Kasahara and Shwasahara. Traditionally used for severe cough and bronchial asthma. Kantakari (Solanum virginianum): Strong Kapha alleviator, used for chronic cough, asthma, and chest congestion. Others: May include Vasa (Adhatoda vasica) for bronchodilation, Sunthi (Zingiber officinale) for digestion and synergism, and Mishri (rock sugar) as a natural sweetener and base (Anupana). 3. Proposed Mechanisms of Action (Modern Perspective): Mucolytic & Expectorant: The herbs reduce the viscosity of bronchial secretions and increase the activity of ciliary epithelium, facilitating the expulsion of mucus. Bronchodilatory: Certain actives (e.g., in Vasa, Bharangi) may exhibit beta-2 agonist-like activity, relaxing bronchial smooth muscles. Anti-inflammatory & Demulcent: Reduces inflammation in the respiratory tract (cytokine modulation) and forms a protective layer over the mucosal lining, alleviating irritation and dry cough. Immunomodulatory: Enhances innate respiratory immunity and modulates allergic responses. 4. Method of Preparation & Administration: Preparation: Dried parts of herbs (fruits, roots, barks) are cleaned, finely powdered, and mixed in specified proportions through geometric dilution. Anupana (Vehicle): Typically administered with honey (for Kapha conditions), warm water, or ghee. The Anupana itself acts as a synergist and targeted delivery vehicle. Dosage: Classical dosage ranges from 3-6 grams, once or twice daily, before or after food as directed by an Ayurvedic practitioner. 5. Indications (As per Ayurvedic Texts): Kasa (cough – various types, especially Kapha-dominant) Shwasa (dyspnoea, asthma) Svara-bheda (hoarseness of voice) Kshataja Kasa (cough due to vitiation of Pitta and blood) Urahkshata (chest injury/complications)
